Comeragh Veterinary bring the next generation of Equine Reproduction Specialists to Kilmacthomas

Bonmahon Sport Horses provided the perfect backdrop for a wonderful day of Continued Professional Development for veterinarians from right across the country.

The course run by Chris McGrath from Comeragh Veterinary, ably assisted by local equine veterinary practitioner Gillian King gave delegates the opportunity to perfect their techniques in equine reproductive ultrasound using the very latest equipment. Fitzgerald and his staff at Bonmahon Sport Horses in Ballinasisla Stud put in a tremendous effort to arrange the availability of almost two dozen mares for examination.

Most of the mares examined were what are called recipient mares.  These are effectively surrogate mothers used to carry to term and subsequently nurse the foal from a different high value mare after a process known as embryo transfer.  Bonmahon Sport Horses facilitate this process for their clients from all over Ireland and the continent.

Another feature of the day was a call to Martin Curran of Castleview Stables in Dunhill where several mares were gathered to afford the opportunity for attending veterinarians to master the skill of late pregnancy diagnosis, with and without ultrasound. In addition the wonderful coastal view from Bonmahon to Annestown on the day was simply breath-taking.

Finally, the entire group retired to Coach House in Kilmacthomas where a fantastic meal and a festive atmosphere was enjoyed by all.

The day was very generously supported by Brian Gee from IMV imaging. IMV provide advanced ultrasound and radiograghical solutions for both large animal and companion animal veterinary practices. Ollie Dillon from Virbac also deserves mention for his help in supplying the chemical restraint needed for some of the procedures, Molloy’s Surgical for the supply of protective equipment and thanks to XLVets Skillnet for promoting the event to a national network of veterinarians.

The event was a resounding success. Chris and Gillian will be organising a similar event early in the New Year. For more information on the course contact:
